2015 - Part 1
Well this year’s been quite a test so far it seems. Without going into too much personal detail it’s been fairly up and down shall we say! One of the best things about the start of this year was of course getting to form a band with Darren Middleton and tour our respective records together.
After releasing ‘Broken Bones’ in November last year I was asked if I wanted to go on the road. I felt a little reluctant for a couple of reasons, one because I’m not a great guitar player but the other is that I pretty much feel like I’m on the road most of the time, being away on location so much. When the 123 agency suggested doing something with Darren however my interest level was peaked somewhat more. I immediately listened to Darren’s solo album ‘Translations’ which I really enjoyed, plus I’m a big 'Powderfinger' fan and have loved the songs Darren brought to that band over the years, as well as his fantastic guitar playing of course. We got together to chat about how it might work (in fact that was at the end of last year). Got on really well from the outset and pretty much decided putting a full band together and both being on stage the whole time while we alternated between each others’ songs would be the way to go.READ MORE
2014 - Part 2
The second half of this year has been pretty much non stop. It started in June (obviously) by shooting the video for “Storm” in Melbourne with the very talented Michael Shanks at the helm, then after doing our Oz release of “The Rover” Kate and I headed to LA and NY for the USA press and premiere. After a couple of weeks there Kate had to head home for work and I went on to Austin, Texas to start Andrew Bujalski’s film “Results” with the adorable Coby Smulders, the brilliant Kevin Corrigan and the hilarious Giovanni Ribisi. It was a really fun shoot in one of the best cities in the States. I was playing an Aussie fitness instructor so needed to get myself into shape. Spent a lot of time back at the gym, as well as running an hour a day which was fairly intense in that heat. I also stopped drinking, ate healthily and gave up dairy and sugar, which was great (apart from missing bloody chocolate everyday) We had a week filming in Marfa Texas as well which is this beautiful historic town that’s quite the arts community, with a fantasticly cool trailer park called El Cosmico.READ MORE
2014 - Part 1
Having spent most of the 2nd half of 2013 working on “Broken Bones”, I ventured back to LA in January to do a guest spot on Sean Hayes’ show “Sean Saves The World” - which unfortunately was cancelled right after I was on… Hopefully not as a result of my comedy skills – or lack thereof. Sean was an absolute delight to work with. I’ve been a fan for so long so it was a real treat to get to know him a little. Who knew he was such an accomplished pianist…. Just Amazing!!! Sad for him though, the show was cancelled. He really is so talented. I know more good things will come his way.READ MORE
This was a pretty quiet year, work-wise. Having said that, I did do one of the most intense films I’ve ever done – David Michod’s “The Rover” (Jan – March) with Rob Pattinson. Personally, I think the film’s amazing. David’s a unique director and the film is extremely evocative. We also did our third Jack Irish TV movie – “Black Tide” (June- July) but apart from that I got to spend time at home in the studio to try and finish the songs I’ve been working on for a while. Getting there slowly.READ MORE
